Rug size guide

The wrong size is the most common mistake people make when buying a rug. Use these diagrams to match the perfect proportions to each room.

Living room

The rug should be large enough that the front legs of all major sofas and chairs sit on it. This anchors the seating arrangement.

  • 5 × 8 ft — Small living room — anchors a single sofa.
  • 8 × 10 ft — Standard living room — front legs of all furniture on the rug.
  • 9 × 12 ft — Large living room — all four legs on the rug.
Bedroom

Place the rug under the bottom two-thirds of the bed so you step onto warmth in the morning. Leave 18–24 inches of rug exposed on each side.

  • 5 × 8 ft — Queen bed — sits under the lower 2/3.
  • 8 × 10 ft — Queen or King — rug surrounds the bed on three sides.
  • 9 × 12 ft — King bed — rug extends well past nightstands.
Dining room

The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

  • 6 × 9 ft — Round 4-person table.
  • 8 × 10 ft — Rectangular 6-person table.
  • 9 × 12 ft — Rectangular 8-person table.
Hallway / Runner

Leave 4–6 inches of floor visible on each side of the runner. Choose the length to match the hallway minus 12 inches.

  • 2.5 × 8 ft — Short hallway.
  • 2.5 × 10 ft — Medium hallway.
  • 2.5 × 12+ ft — Long hallway — extends to the threshold.
Entryway

Pick a rug 4–6 inches wider than your door on each side. Round rugs soften foyers with no other curves.

  • 2 × 3 ft — Small entry — frames the door.
  • 3 × 5 ft — Standard entry — fits a console table.
  • 4 × 6 ft — Open foyer — anchors the area.
